Coping With ID Theft

Identity Theft is a crime experienced around the World, and has existed for hundreds of years. However, with the sudden explosion in online communications and shopping, millions of additional people have placed themselves in the firing line for would be identity thieves.

The best way to avoid identity theft (or ID theft) is to give the criminal no opportunities to access your private information. Without personal details it becomes very hard to convincingly steal your ID. With a few simple details such as date of birth, mother's maiden name and current address, things become much easier.

So, the key is to prevent identity theft before it happens, not engage in damage limitation after your credit rating has been ruined and your bank account emptied!

Remember, because I cannot stress it enough... Always prevent identity theft and stop people creating a fake ID at your expense rather than think 'it will probably be ok' and then spend months repairing the damage.

On Line:

Keep your online details as fuzzy and minimal as possible

Many online forms work fine with limited or even fictional personal details

Set up a free e-mail account to use with online submissions - use a pseudonym or at least avoid using your full name.

At Home:

Never throw an ATM (cash machine) receipt in a bin or on the floor outside the bank

If you don't need to keep receipts, either burn or shred them

Don't throw offers for loans, financial services such as credit cards etc into the rubbish. Shred or burn them to stop people applying in your name against your credit.

Destroy all old credit and bank cards - totally!

In fact, get into the habit of burning or shredding every unwanted free offer, letter, loan application form and similar correspondence that contains ANY personal details.
